How Do I Know If I Need a Root Canal?

How Do I Know If I Need a Root Canal?

Root canal treatment is necessary when a tooth is severely infected or abscessed. Infected teeth usually show noticeable symptoms but they are sometime asymptomatic. This is why we encourage patients to visit a dentist regularly for routine cleanings and exams to be sure that no infected teeth are present. Infected teeth that are left untreated can have a negative impact on not only your oral health, but your overall health as well.

If a root canal is required, our dentist, Dr. Muradian, will complete the treatment in up to a couple of visits. During the treatment, the infected portion of the tooth is removed and the tooth is thoroughly cleaned. In some cases, the tooth is sealed with a composite filling. More severe cases on the other hand, require a dental crown.

The symptoms of an infected tooth that needs a root canal includes:

  • Ongoing toothache
  • Pain in chewing or when you apply pressure
  • Lingering sensitivity hot or cold temperatures
  • Dark discoloration of the tooth
  • Swelling or tenderness of gums around the affected tooth

Some of these symptoms mentioned above will also be present when you have a cavity, so a root canal may not always be needed. We encourage you to visit our dentist if you believe that you are in need of a root canal. It’s better to be safe than to be sorry!
